Gap Year

Gap years are not one size fits all.
They are a
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE.

Where will your adventure take you?

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

-Robert Frost

A gap year is not just a break, it is an intentional pause in academics to pursue experiential learning and personal growth and can be an amazing experience and just what high-achievers may need to reenergize them for their future of changing the world.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Gap Year Association data, 90% of students who take time off after high school enroll in a four-year institution within one year of completing their gap year.

More and more colleges are encouraging gap years including Harvard, MIT, NYU, and FSU.  Some schools even offer a gap year scholarship. The primary benefits for the institution are the diversity and breadth of experience and discussion gap year students bring to lectures. The length can be from a couple of months to a full year.

Gap year experiences/benefits can include, but are not limited to:

  • Team Building

  • Conflict Management

  • Career Exploration

  • Self-discovery

  • Development of Life Skills

  • Determination of Goals

  • Identify New Passions

  • Language Development

  • Volunteer Work

  • Projects Experience

  • Internship Experiences

  • Cultural Exploration

  • Work Experience

  • Learning Independence

Especially for high achievers, many students return to academics rejuvenated and refocused.  If your student is already ahead due via dual enrollment, a gap year may be a rewarding growth opportunity.

A growing trend, in 2018 only 3% of graduating Seniors participated in a gap year.  In 2021. that number jumped to 20% according to BridgeU
